Front Door Greeting {with Chalkboard Vinyl}

I am slowly but surely working on bringing my new home together. I still have a ways to go but it has been fun to find a place for everything and create new items to put in this beautiful home that I never want to leave. {too bad we are just renting it}. I knew I wanted to make my front porch welcoming, kind and friendly to our new neighbors around us. I change out the wreath each season and holiday, but I wanted to do something else on the door. I thought about the tradition vinyl welcome sign but then quickly came to the realization that I wanted something a little different and unique. I found some chalkboard vinyl I have had in my craft stash for quite a while now I just didn't have the perfect project for it yet, that is until I thought of this simple, but really fun decal for my front door. It was so quick and easy, literally half of a nap time craft :)

{Supplies I used}
-Chalkboard vinyl {mine is Cricut brand}
-transfer tape {not require but it does make it easier to get everything straight and is a quicker application process-the cricut chalkboard vinyl came with the transfer tape}
-Cricut mini {again this is not require you could easily do this without a cutting machine it is just quicker}
-Marker and scissors {if you don't have a cutting machine or a way to borrow one}
-Applicator tool {or really you could just use a credit card}
-Chalk
-Rag
{What I did}

The first thing I did is hook up my cricut mini and chose my designs that I wanted to use:

 Main label- label 1-5 11 1/2 inches
Triangle banner- banner 2 each triangle is 1 inch total of 71/2 inches
Arrow- Arrow 8 inches
heart- heart-5  1.5 inches

Then once I had it all picked out, designed and sized, I cut it out on some scrap paper to make sure everything was size correctly, then I cut it again this time on the chalkboard vinyl.

***If you do not have a cutting machine you can design it your self or find designs online to print out and trace onto the vinyl then you are going to cut out your designs with scissors.

The machine will cut the vinyl and leave the back uncut. This is nice for the transfer tape. Once it is cut you are going to peel off the excess vinyl as shown above.

Next you will take your transfer tape and measure it to the size of your decal backing, then peel the tape off its backing, put the sticky side onto the chalkboard vinyl and use your applicator or credit card to smooth it on. So it looks like the last picture above.

Peel the backing off and the chalkboard vinyl will stay on the tape then you will place it onto the door right where you want it, use your applicator and rub it around to make sure it is sticking onto the door and then peel the tape away and all you are left with is the chalkboard decal! tada!

Next you will take some chalk and rub it over the entire thing, then use your rag to wipe the chalk off. Then your surface is ready for coloring, writing, or picture drawing. Use your creativity. This is a great tip for all new chalkboard surfaces so that it doesn't leave a ghost {previous writing} on it.

Didn't it turn out so cute?! I Love how it is unique and different than any of my neighbors doors. I also love that it is not permanent and it is great for both renter and home owners alike.

For now I just colored in the banner and arrow with some yellow and Wrote Welcome in the label. It will be fun to change this out for the season, holiday or whatever is going on in the area or our family at the time.

 Current front porch. I have some really fun ideas coming up to
spruce it up a bit so make sure to stay tuned

Mason Jar Picnic

I teamed up with a couple of my awesome blogger friends, Our Thrifty Ideas, Girl Loves Glam and Happy Scraps,  to participate in a product of a month post. This month we were assigned mason jars. When I heard the assignment I was excited to share this fun picnic I did a couple years ago. You can also find my vintage painted mason jar tutorial HERE.

Now onto the fun picnic all you need is mason jars, paper, computer and printer, I used some burlap and bakers twine, some utensils and whatever food you want to bring.

For the main dish I did Beanie Weenies. Easy I just heated them up right before we left and put them in the jars and they were still warm when we got to the park. I attached a fork to the jar with some bakers twine. And Labeled the top just printing it out from my computer and taping it to the lid.

For a side dish I made us each a salad in a jar. I put the dressing in first, then the harder vegetable and then the lettuce on top so nothing gets soggy then when you are ready to eat it just stake it up and it is perfectly mixed and crisp. Again I attached a fork and labeled it. Also I color coded our food. Ty's were blue, Mine were yellow and Maddux was red.

Next I did two jars of cut up cantaloupe for all of us to share.

Then with our drinks I just put Ice and the kind of drink we each wanted in it and attached a cute paper straw.

And very last even the dessert was in a jar. I made a cake in a jar. I simply baked cupcakes and then I cut them in half and then layers cake, frosting, cake, frosting, cake and then topped it with frosting and sprinkles. Attached a fork and oh man was it delicious.

We took it to the park, set out a blanket, took off our shoes and enjoyed the food on a beautiful summer evening.

Like I said we did this two summers ago so yes, that is my little Maddux at one, he is now three. I can't believe how fast they grow. What a sweet boy and it was fun to look back on these pictures and all the fun we had. I need to do this again this year.

After the food, we of course had to play on the slides and swings. Now go and make your own mason jar picnic it is fun for the whole family. Your kids will think it is really cool and it really is so fast and easy.

Dining Room Wall Art {Poppyseed Projects}

I LOVE poppyseed projects and was so excited when I first discovered them about 6 months ago. I instantly fell in love with their frames, their crafts,  projects, how easy it was to create, and all the possibilities of using their materials and my own creativity. Not only do they have great products but the owners and staff are all so helpful and sweet. So Today I am going to share how I transformed by dinning room wall with functional and one of a kind art.

First things first I headed to Poppyseed Projects store on a serious mission to find something for my dining room wall. I LOVE their design frames with a capital everything so I knew that I wanted to use them some how. I picked the frames I wanted and then I saw the wood letters and knew I had to have them. I played around with a few words and then decided on the simple word EAT. So I walked out the door with 2 4X6 Eleanor frames, 1 5X5 oval frame, and the letters E A T in their smaller size of the wood letters and knew just what to do. Now to the fun tutorial.

{Supplies I Used}

-2 4X6 Eleanor frames {poppyseed projects}
-1 5X5 oval frame {Poppyseed projects}
-Wood letters spelling EAT {poppyseedprojects}
-White paint
-Red paint
-foam paint brushes
-sand paper
-Stain {Minwax Early American}
-Cloth
-Chalkboard vinyl or paint
-Your favorite recipes printed out

{What I did}

Once I had everything picked out I started to paint. I painted the letters white first {just 1 coat}. Then when the white dried I painted the red on top so that when I sanded them later some white would show through.

Then I painted the Eleanor frames white and the oval frame red. I did 2 coats of paint to make sure they were covered nicely. Then I set them aside to dry.

Once the paint was dry, I sanded down all the edges on the letters and the frames. Then I took my stain and rubbed it on the sanded edges.

On the two white frames I rubbed some stain on the surface and then wiped most of it off with a dry cloth to give it an aged look.

Next, I printed off two of my family's favorite recipes and put them in the frames. I loved displaying our favorites, they are easy to switch out and it is functional so you can see the recipe when you are cooking.

For the oval frame I wanted it to be chalkboard so we could put little messages to each other in it, what was going on that day, or what we would be having for dinner that evening.

You could paint the frame backing with the chalkboard paint, but I decided I would use the chalkboard vinyl that I had on hand. It was so easy and no drying time. I just traced the oval shape backing on the vinyl and cut it out. Then just simply applied it with a squeegee.

I prepped it by rubbing chalk all over it covering the whole thing then wiped it all off. This makes it so it doesn't leave a ghost on the chalkboard from each message you write.

Then I hung up my EAT letters on a piece of custom wall art that I had made {I will be sharing all about where I got the plans for this beautiful pallet art in a post really soon with a fun giveaway}, with command strips. I love the color and dimension it gives.

I also hung up the frames with the command strips. I love these things, you have to check them out. If you have never heard of them they are great to hang up pictures and small pieces of art, because they leave no holes or damage to your walls.

I think what I love most about sharing this wall is that it is great for both home owners and renters. This is something you can all do. We are renting and although there is a lot that we can't change that I would like to {Like that lovely light fixer...eek} I am able to bring my style, personality and make it feel like my family's home in other ways painting furniture, DIY projects, color and of course art like this wall.

I love how it turned out and the best part of all their unfinished frames, blocks, letters and plaques is they are completely customizable. You can use any color, technique, pattern, and put anything in them that fits your personality and decor style.

Now I just need a big Poppyseed frame and dry Erase Calendar to replace that one on the right, to tie it all together. That also is not our table we are just borrowing it while I transform ours. It is sitting in the garage drying and almost done as we speak! Oh and I love it! Post coming soon. It will update it even more and make this area look stunning! stay tuned.
