How I stay Motivated to Exercise

I have had a few people ask me how I make the time and stay motivated to exercise and stay consistent at it so I thought I would write up a quick post of some of the ways I do just that. These are all things that have helped me to start back up after babies, stay motivated through pregnancy, and through motherhood. All of these have helped me at different times and on different days. They are simple but are everything if this really is important to you and you want this for yourself.

 Find An exercise program I enjoy

First and for most you need to enjoy it. If you don't like it, if it is miserable you wont keep at it. There are so many different ways to stay active. Running, Swimming, lifting, crossfit, HITT, Biking, hiking, climbing, sports, dance, barre, boxing and so much more I can't even think of right now. There are options and you are bound to find one of them enjoyable. Try them all out if you have to but find something you love. Most places have free trials so take advantage of those and find what really speaks to you before you invest in memberships. I have found through trying different forms of fitness that I love to run and Crossfit is my passion. I love to run because I can just go, turn my mind off completely and run my heart out for as short or as long as I want. I love Crossift because it pushes me in ways I had no clue I could be pushed, it brings out a drive in me I didn't know I had, it is fun and it teaches me a lot about life.

Take progression pictures and look back on them

This is one that is hard for me but I think it is hard for everyone. But you will be so glad you took these pictures when you look back on them and see how far you have come. Once you have found that form of exercise you love take a picture, and every so often take another and keep doing that and look back on them often. Seeing results is probably one of the best motivators out there. You do not have to share them, you do not have to show anyone, just looking at them yourself will give you that motivation to keep going and see what it is doing for your health.

I'm going to let you in on a little secret. I have body image issues I think most women do. I have since I was a teenager. I don't know if it is that my body type isn't the ideal type that are shown in all the magazines or what but I have always struggled with my accepting my thighs, tummy and arms, but especially my thighs. I have been in a rut lately and just haven't seemed like i have been progressing, Then i saw these pictures side by side and i couldn't believe the change. It is hard to see the change in ourselves so take those pictures you will be glad you did. The first picture is a month after I had Holden, The second is when I was just running, the third is when I had been doing crossfit a while and then last one is recently.

Focus and Remember how I feel after I am finished

Sometimes it is just plain hard to push through the uncomfortable times that working out brings, you are gasping for breathe and just plain tired, and sometimes it is hard to even get out the door to go to the gym. Those are the times you need to really focus on and remember how you feel when you are finished. Did you feel energized? accomplished? proud? strong? Focus on those feelings. Because that is what this is all about.

 Surround myself with people who I enjoy working out with

This is one of my faviorite and most powerful motivators to keep on going. When you hit those hard days, when it is cold outside and you just don't want to go out the door, when you are tired, and are thinking of every excuse in the book remember who you get to go see. Surround yourself with people you enjoy working out with, your friends, people who push you, people who inspire you. Because when you surround yourself with those people they will keep you accountable, they will push you, and you will have a good time.

 Find clothing I love to workout in

I've said it many times before and I will say it again because I truly believe that when you feel good and look good, you perform better. Sometimes all you need to go to the gym on a cold, dark winter morning are some new bright, adorable leggings because you want to go show them off. Some of my favorites are Albion fit {pictured above in the leggings and hoodie}, lulu lemon, swoobfit, reebok and nike,

Use it as my me time

I wrote all about my feelings on everyone getting their time to themselves in this post. But shortly I am just going to say that it is super important mothers, fathers, wives, husbands, single, in a relationship we all need time to ourselves. Something to rejuvinate us, energize us, in the end make us better people and sometimes yes to even get away from responsibility for just a tiny bit. Is it selfish? Well I guess it is, but I have learned that selfish is not always a bad thing. Being selfish one-two hours a day when there are 22 more to be selfless seems like a pretty good deal in the end. Take time for you. It is important. I mean I am saying this for me just as much for you because even though I feel this to be true and know it is what I need as a mother it is hard to put yourself first for a little bit, but I am working on it because I know how good it is for me, my health and my family.

Write down goals and record times/weights/reps to revisit

This is another great way to see your progress and how far you have come. Progress and results are the best motivators. You then see all the hard work, time and dedication are worth it and it is showing through times, weight, energy level, or strength. Don't just have goals, write them down. Because you forget, you forget what a huge deal it was when you thought of it so when you write them down and look back on them and can say "hey, I achieved that goal." that is going to make you feel good. It is going to motivate you to want to keep growing and then you are writing new goals all the time as you grow and progress.

Use as therapy

I'm not sure what it is about exercise but it is great therapy. If you are needing to get out frustration go out for a run and clear your head, go boxing and get some aggression out, kill a work out to make yourself feel strong and worth it or go and lift some really heavy weight to prove you can. See what you are capable of, feel, and use that as fuel to help you get through the workout.

Listen and Rock out to good music

A great song, and playlist are great motivators and keep me going when I am tired. Getting a good beat, a song that means something to you, a song that makes you feel like you can fly these are all great motivators and get you pumped and ready to go. Listening to good music helps me to run and just keep going. It helps me lift heavy when I need an extra push and hey I just really like music so it makes me happy while I exercise too, sometimes if you are lucky I even dance.

Reward Myself

This is one that I am not the best at and need to be better at that can be a great tool and motivator is rewarding yourself for exercising, for getting the PR, and for meeting goals. These don't have to be big rewards. It can be allowing yourself 30 extra minutes of sleep, a cheat meal or dessert, or for the bigger successes it can be a piece of workout clothing, or shoes, Just reward yourself with something because you deserve it for working that bum off.

I hope that at least a few of these suggestions can help you to stay motivated to workout and enjoy it.
Happy Friday

Working Out with Friends & {$100 Albion fit Giveaway}

I don't know about you but sometimes I just don't feel like going to the gym. Don't get me wrong I love it there once I am there and ever since I started Crossfit, read more about that journey HERE, I look forward to it even more, but we all have those days. Those are the times I am really grateful to know these beautiful girls that have a passion for fitness as much as I do and will come with me if I ask them to. I think it is important to have those friends that share your passion and it is even more important in fitness when sometimes we need that extra motivation, push or accountability to get up, out the door and to the gym and when we do we are so happy we did, am I right?!

A couple weekends ago I was needing some extra motivation, and I was so excited when my friend Becky asked me and these cute friends of ours to get together and workout. We got up bright and early on a Saturday morning and met up at Becky's favorite place to work out and second home, The Gym at Station Park in Farmington, Utah. It is a beautiful facility, brand spankin new, state of the art equipment, functional, friendly and just a great atmosphere that gets you coming back for more. The location is great for all my Davis county, Ogden and Salt Lake City friends, and there is some amazing shopping you can do after, now that is a win. The gym as wonderful equipment, classes and they offer personal training. Big thank you to the Gym at station Park for having us, it was a blast, just check out the video to see how much fun getting your fitness on with friends really is. I just love these girls and hope to make this a more regular thing in the future. Thank you for motivating me!

Now invite a friend to come to the gym, on a run, to zumba or even to a crossfit class next time you go.  I have invited a couple friends to do crossfit with me and so far each of them has loved it. Also don't be shy and make friends with those who already go to your gym, or classes. The guys in my class keep me going and for sure hold me accountable. I hear from them if I don't show up, sometimes that is all we need to keep going.  Not only will this help motivate you and hold you accountable to your workouts, but this can also motivate and help others.

Now for the fun surprise for you all, I don't know if you noticed from the video but not only did we have some great workout tips, showed an amazing gym, and how much fun working out with friends is, but we were all looking pretty cute in our workout clothing ALL from the amazing Albion Fit. If you already follow my blog you know by now how much I adore this company. They are by far my favorite fitness clothes and swimsuits I own. We all loved ours so much that we teamed up with them to give you all a chance to win $100 to their store and might I add their Spring line is AMAZING!!!! Fitness, Spartan Race and a GIVEAWAY

This week I am going to be talking a lot of fitness. I know I post about fitness here and there anyway, but with it being the beginning of the year and with everyone excited about all of their goals, and dreams I thought I would share with you some of my goals, dreams and experiences through out a couple of posts. Today I am going to talk a little about my journey since I had my last baby to what I am doing now...A long with one of my goals for this year and a GIVEAWAY that all you fitness lovers do NOT want to miss out on.

After I had my last little baby back in August of 2012 I would pretty much just go to the gym and run. It was good. I felt good and it was nice to be active again and start losing some weight. But I was getting bored fast and I needed something to work toward. That is when I joined a team for my very first Ragnar Race. You can read more about my experience HERE. Now that I had that goal and something to work toward my running and training had more of a meaning. Ragnar was a blast and I can't wait to do another.

It was fun to have races to keep me going. The next race I did was just for fun but it kept me running and staying active. If you ever get a chance to run the color run, jump on it because it is such a fun experience.

The next race I trained for was my first half marathon in the end of September 2013. This was one I really had to train for, follow a plan and stick with it to be able to reach this goal. I was doing great, I ran my first half marathon in under 2 hours and I felt so good about my accomplishment. It was so nice to have reached that goal I have had for so many years.

Now, running is great and all and I think I will always LOVE it. I love the way it makes me feel, I love the me time, I love the mental toughness I am able to exercise while running, but I just felt like something was missing. I needed more. I wanted to be more well rounded. I wanted my muscle back from my gymnastics days. But just going to a gym and lifting weights with no real knowledge or plan wasn't going to get me anywhere.

Then my brother introduced me to the world of crossfit. We moved in together last summer, slowly got some equipment and started doing at home crossfit modified workouts together out in our garage. It felt so great. I loved it right away. We did this from the end of august until November. By this point it was getting really cold to be doing it out there and I was wanting more. I wanted more coaching, more experience and I wanted to be able to grow.

So in December I went to try out a crossfit gym called, Crossfit Kimokeo in Kaysville, Utah. I had an amazing experience right away and felt so welcome. I knew this is what I needed to be able to grow and really take this whole crossfit thing to the next level. Stay tuned for a more detailed post about Crossfit Kimokeo coming this week, you do not want to miss this post especially if you have any interest in going to a crossfit gym, live in davis county, and just want an amazing experience.

In just the 6 weeks I have been going to the Crossfit gym I have been pushed more than I have been pushed in a long time. It is making me want to push myself, go out of my comfort zone and be more open to trying new things. I am really excited to see what happens in this new journey and will be sharing with you my goals and dreams in crossfit in my next post.I ran my second half marathon only a couple weeks ago with no training except crossfit. It is amazing what this sport can do to your body.

To go along with trying new things, things that will push me, and things that kinda of scare me a little I was so so excited when the amazing people behind the Spartan race contacted me to spread the word about their sweet races. Not only is it excited to spread the word, but I am so excited to be participating in my first spartan race this year. It terrifies me like really makes me nervous if I can get through it, but it is going to push me to work hard, to train hard and I am going to show myself that I can and so can you!

What is a spartan race? Well from their own words this is what you can expect when you sign up for a spartan race....
"Spartan Race is on a mission to get you active, healthy, excited about change, and return to our ancient roots where running through woods, getting dirty, and facing adversity was part of everyday life. Our events are all about challenging today’s perception of normal. Our events challenge the familiar, today’s perception of normal living and getting you out of your comfort zone! At Spartan Race, we do this everyday and it shapes everything we do. Having experienced many different racing events, we wanted to make adventure racing more accessible to everyone, but do not be fooled by the word ‘accessible’, as our events have a challenge for everyone’s needs. Spartan Race now introduces a level for everyone beginning with the entry level Spartan Sprint, intermediate level Super Spartan, the advanced Spartan Beast, and the ‘99.9% need not apply’ extreme level Death Race. Whatever your level, Spartan Race will test your strength, stamina, and sense of humor"

So now that we have gotten you all excited here are the upcoming races:

 Arizona Spartan Sprint - February 8th and 9th in Chandler, Arizona. {3+ miles}

 Las Vegas Super Spartan - April 5th in Las Vegas, Nevada. {8 miles}

 Salt Lake City Spartan Beast - June 28th in Midway, Utah.  {10-12 miles}

Now this is not going to be an easy fluff race. I don't want you coming away from this thinking you are just going to run through color or mud. This is going to challenge you, there will be obstacle and it will be hard, but it will be sooooo worth it.

I signed up for the Salt Lake city race. I am excited and hoping that some of you will join me. For all you fabulous A mommy's life with a touch of Yellow readers you get 15% off your registration by going to this link http://bit.ly/spartanwarrior

Now for all you fitness lover readers of mine I am super excited to announce that Spartan and I have teamed up to giveaway one free entry to any 2014 Spartan race! Simply fill out the rafflecopter below. GOOD LUCK!!!! and may the odds be ever in your favor. Well because this is one Bad A race!

Revisiting 31 days of Health and Exercise

If you have been here before you know that fitness is my passion. It has been a part of my life since I was tiny. I always loved family bike rides, took dance tumbling and tap when I was a toddler. Then when I got into Elementary I got into Gymnastics which became my love and entire life for 10 years until I got injured as a level 10 my senior year of high school. I was devastated my dream of doing college gymnastics was taken away so suddenly but I stayed involved by coaching and found other ways to stay fit. It was so easy when I was a gymnast I worked out 20 hours a week but it was fun, as soon as I was done I had to educate myself and find other ways to be active in the real world. I loved it so much that I then started my degree in Sports medicine and athletic training, due to getting married and moving up north for hubby's law school I changed to getting my bachelors degree and teaching license in Physical Education and Health Education. I wouldn't have it any other way I love sharing how important being physically fit and healthy really is. Since I am not teaching right now due to wanting to stay home with my littles I like to share what I do or what you can do to stay fit on my little blog here now and then.

Now that I am a mom I like to do workouts that I can do at home or at my local gym {planet fitness is only $10 a month my friends and open 24 hours}. I have a passion for running {I just ran my first half marathon last Saturday} you can read about my ragnar experience HERE,  and now I am loving Crossfit out of our garage gym that is coming together and it is sooo exciting. To read part one of my crossfit gym go HERE, more to come.  I love crossfit so much because it is a lot of the same movements and basics that I used as a gymnast. I know not everyone had a crossfit training living with them, or the money to build a crossfit gym in their garage and that is why I am going to be sharing with you some modified crossfit based workouts that you can do at home very shortly. So stay tuned for those coming this month.

I know how crazy and hectic life can be as a mom. Trying to find time to cook dinner, while holding the baby, entertaining the toddler, cleaning the house, doing the laundry, hemming some pants, playing, grocery shopping, crafting, teaching and everything else we do as busy moms it is really hard to find time to workout. I know this first hand. I have worked out before the little wake up the morning, I have workout during nap time, preschool time, or at night when they go to bed. You can find the time and it will be so worth it.

Last October I participated in a really fun series that The Nesting Place hosts every year. It is called the 31 days link up. I thought since I love fitness that I would share 31 days of some fitness and health advise, tips, tricks and workouts with my readers and her readers through the link up. It was a lot of fun and the response was phenomenal. It was great to hear that you were applying the tips in your own crazy busy lives.

I know I have gotten some new readers since last year and I have had some people ask me for these again so I thought that I would share with you my last years 31 days of health and fitness from A mommy's life with a touch of yellow. Since last year I have had more experiences and more advise that I wanting to share with you all. I have also lost all of my baby weight from baby number two since this series, so stay tuned with some new and fresh workouts and tutorials that helped me kick the baby weight, gain muscle, tone and tighten it all. But for now enjoy these babies, they will help you to get motivated and ready for the awesome workouts that are coming your way....

Make sure to pin them and use as reference and motivation when ever needed. Share share share
